On his first day in office, Zohran Mamdani vowed to “reinvent” New York City, declaring “a fresh chapter” and an ambitious start to his term.

A Groundbreaking Mayor

The new political star, who was a relatively obscure state assemblyman, has become the city's first Muslim mayor. He also made history by being the first to be take the oath of office using the Islamic holy text.

“A opportunity of this kind is rare and rarer still is it that the public whose hold the levers of change,” Mamdani remarked.

Defying counsel to be modest, the mayor was emphatic: “I will do no such thing. The only expectation I seek to change is that of modest goals. Beginning today we will govern expansively and audaciously.”

Steering by Democratic Socialist Principles

Mamdani did not shy away from his core beliefs. “I was elected as a democratic socialist and I will lead as one. I will not compromise my principles for concern of being called radical,” he proclaimed to rapturous applause.

The inauguration was a dual event, beginning with a late-night oath-taking in a disused subway station. He was officially inaugurated on the steps of city hall by Vermont independent senator Bernie Sanders, who praised Mamdani's election as a victory over powerful interests.

A Sweeping Policy Agenda

Mamdani now begins one of the most demanding jobs in American politics, with a plan including:

• Free childcare
• Free buses
• A rent freeze for approximately 1 million households
• A trial program of municipally-operated grocery stores

The projected $10 billion cost of these services may prove difficult to finance. Mamdani has vowed to raise taxes on the richest residents and big business. However, as a municipality under the authority of the state government, he will require the backing of Governor Kathy Hochul.

Managing External Dynamics

The new mayor also faces apprehension from some members of the Jewish community concerned about his past comments regarding Israel. Sensitivities were revealed during the transition when a senior aide stepped down over offensive past social media posts.

Mamdani has attempted to address these concerns by convincing Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to stay on, preventing the optics of losing a top Jewish official.

On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has called Mamdani a “communist” and threatened withholding federal funding. Despite this, a recent meeting between the two was described as unexpectedly friendly.

The Fundamental Tests of Governing

Traditionally, New York mayors are evaluated by their success in delivering city upkeep: trash collection, curbing the rodent problem, repairing roadways, and making sure reliable transit service.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams touted his team's anti-crime efforts, pointing to record low numbers of homicides and gun violence in 2025, with murders recorded.

As his work begins, Mamdani and his wife will relocate from their Astoria apartment to the stately mayoral residence. The outgoing mayor offered a unusual warning about a supposed resident spirit in the home, which allegedly only troubles those who fail to “do right by the city.”

Mamdani concluded his speech with a simple statement: “The work has only just begun.”
